Supporting Veterans and their families
In 2026, we have added a new area of focus: helping the growing number of veterans re-enter civil society. More than 1.5 million veterans will one day return from the war, and badly wounded veterans have already come home. Earlier this summer, we ran a successful pilot with a new partner of ours – Future Reclaimed (FR/Nediyne Maybutne) with a focus on Moral Injury. FR runs peer-to- peer counselling for veterans and trains veterans to become facilitators and lead new workshops. Moral Injury is increasingly being recognised as an important issue in this field. It is not classified as a mental illness, but rather as a deep existential and psychological wound. If left unaddressed, it can severely degrade a person’s quality of life and is strongly linked to depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts.
Given this urgent need, our online Mental Health platform, Moe Kolo, has also added 8-week psychosocial support groups for veterans, led by veterans. While Moe Kolo traditionally operates online only (with 17,000 participants in the last 3 years offered support), it is now testing in-person groups, as veterans are more likely to join when they are led by their peers.
From 3 days intensive workshops to 8-week support groups, all these initiatives have one thing in common. They aim to offer veterans tools to reintegrate their families, their communities and their professional lives. Only if they do will civil society in Ukraine strive.
